AMC Boston 47th Annual Meeting
The Boston Chapter’s 47th Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, November 19th, 2023. The meeting will be hosted virtually and is open to all members of the Boston Chapter community. Whether you’re an AMC member who isn’t yet active with the Boston Chapter, or a regular attendee of chapter trips and events, this online event gives you a chance to hear from the Boston Chapter Executive Committee and AMC staff and to participate in the election of chapter officers for 2024.

Volunteer Service Award
Our inaugural year with this new program which recognizes those members who make a positive contribution to the Chapter. This award honors AMC volunteers who have contributed outstanding efforts to the mission of the Chapter for the past year or more and at the highest levels. Those who have enhanced and sustained the integrity of the Chapter’s conservation, education and recreation values, with a special acknowledgement that the recipients have developed a complete understanding of the values and goals of the chapter through their committee volunteer efforts. Chapter Officers for 2024
Elizabeth Ryan, Chair (3rd term)
Elizabeth is nominated to serve her second term as Chapter Chair. She is the immediate past Chair of the Hiking & Backpacking (HB) Committee and past coordinator of the Spring Hiking Program. She leads hikes for HB year round. Elizabeth grew up in the New England area but didn’t start hiking until after grad school. She has completed the New Hampshire 4000 footers, explored some of the glaciated peaks of the Pacific Northwest and trekked in Iceland, Scotland, New Zealand and Newfoundland. Professionally, Elizabeth is now a Design Director for mobile applications at a Boston based insurance company.
Jesse Waites, Vice Chair (3rd term)
Jesse is nominated to serve his second term as Vice Chair. Jesse is the past-Chair of the Boston Chapter’s 20’s & 30’s Committee, where he assisted with key AMC initiatives. He also volunteers with the HB Committee’s Winter Hiking Program as their Breakout Room Coordinator and leads/co-leads AMC hikes year-round. A transplant from the South, he now is proud to call New England home. When he isn’t working on finishing his 48 List he can be found cycling, reading, or training for long distance hut to hut treks such as the Alta Via 1 or the Tour Du Mont Blanc, both of which he has hiked in years past.
Bill Sample, Treasurer (3rd term)
Bill is nominated to serve his second term as Chapter Treasurer. Bill first joined AMC in the 1980s and was introduced to backpacking in the White Mountains on several AMC over-nighters. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in the mid-1990’s he was active in skiing, backpacking, mountaineering, climbing, kayaking and canoeing in the Cascades, fresh and salt water wilderness. After returning to the Boston area Bill re-joined the AMC and is an active supporter of the Club’s wilderness preservation and accessibility initiatives. He is glad to volunteer his time to provide the financial management support the Chapter and activity committees require to do what they do best and to help the Club satisfy its financial control and reporting obligations to continue its mission. Going forward, Bill hopes to get more involved in local walks to introduce more people to the outdoors and, while his knees are still functional, to check-the-box on a few more 4000-footers.
Tom Broom, Secretary (2nd term)
Tom was born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where he grew up hiking, camping, backpacking, and whitewater rafting throughout the Great Smoky Mountains. Tom moved to the Boston area for law school during which he (somewhat) lost touch with the outdoors. Tom reports that he is very grateful for finding AMC because it has provided him with ample opportunities to reconnect with the outdoors. He has even expanded his interests to kayaking and hopes to (maybe) one day take up sailing as well. It is in part because of his gratitude that Tom wants to give back and serve as the Secretary for the Boston Chapter. Professionally, Tom works as an attorney for the City of Boston where he serves as Executive Secretary and legal counsel to the City’s Zoning Board of Appeal. He believes that his experience in that role make him an excellent candidate for the Secretary position.
Jon Dugas, Member At Large (2nd term)
Jon is an avid hiker, biker, runner, and snowboarder who’s been involved with the AMC since he was in high school. He’s slowly making his way through the NH 48 and is working on leading some friends through them as well. Jon has spent time at a couple consulting firms in his career but is now the Director of Sustainability and Enterprise Risk for a consumer product company. He’s hoping to help with conservation initiatives across the committees and become more involved with the chapter as a whole.
David Garrison, Member At Large (2nd term)
David enjoys hiking, camping, and backpacking. He hikes locally in the Blue Hills, the Middlesex Fells, and Wachusett. In New Hampshire, he’s working on the list of 48 4000 footers. He has hiked and backpacked in a number of places in the U.S. and Canada including Vermont, Tennessee, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, California, and Alaska. David was involved in Scouting for many years as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his son’s troop in Newton where he provided adult leadership for hikes and camping trips and led the troop’s fundraising efforts. David works as a Software Product Manager at MathWorks in Natick, MA. As a Product Manager, he works with development teams to define requirements for new product features and define long-term product strategy. David is nominated to serve in his first term as an At-Large Member.
Jeff Goldberg, Member At Large (2nd term)
Jeff Goldberg has been an AMC member since 2017 when a stay at Joe Dodge Lodge and a hike with his wife along Franconia ridge reignited his love of the outdoors and hiking. Jeff has since used Highland Center as a fly fishing home base, bunked down at the alpine huts during a three-day hike from Madison to Lakes of the Clouds, and has started trail running on local trails in Boston and surrounding areas. Jeff is halfway through completing the 48 4Ks and when he’s not looking for new adventures in the outdoors, Jeff works at a software company in downtown Boston. His appreciation for AMC’s mission to foster the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the outdoors, and the power that has to positively impact our lives and the environment led him to want to become more involved in the organization, sharing these experiences with other individuals and communities.
