Boston Chapter Skiing Committee

Leader Information

The Ski Committee fully supports its leaders and hopes this page provides a useful resource of information for trip leaders and leaders in training (LiT). The Ski Committee wants to help you with problems or questions about your trip.

How do I become a Ski Leader or Leader in Training (LiT)?

We welcome leaders and leaders in training with new ideas and energy. Requirements for leaders in the Ski Committee are two LiT’s with an approved Ski Leader (strong preference for these two LiT’s to be with two different leaders), or one LiT and one instructional at a Ski Committee Workshop. Anyone may become a Ski LiT by asking the Ski Committee Chair; however, we recommend first taking the AMC Boston Chapter Leadership Training Workshop, usually offered through the Boston Chapter Hiking/Backpacking Committee. This workshop emphasizes group safety and dynamics, and decision-making skills. LiT’s applying for leadership status do so by submitting a “resume” to the Ski Committee Chair. Your resume should include the following:

  • Brief description of yourself and your favorite places to ski.
  • List the trips you’ve LiT’d with the Ski Committee or workshops you taught. Be sure to include dates, location, and leader’s name.
  • References from the leaders you’ve worked with.
  • Leads or LiT’s for other AMC committees. Please include leader contact information.
  • Outdoor trip leadership training you have taken, such as the AMC Boston Chapter Leadership Training Program, or the AMC Mountain Leadership School.
  • Other trips or groups you’ve organized or helped managed outside the AMC.
  • Description of the what types of trips you are interested in leading with the Ski Committee.

Backcountry trips are defined as trips where, in case of emergency, you are over one hour’s travel from outside help. If you plan to become a backcountry ski leader, you must take a certified Wilderness First Aid course, such as SOLO Wilderness First Aid before leading your first backcountry ski trip listed with our committee. The Hiking/Backpacking Committee of the Boston Chapter regularly sponsors WFA courses in the Boston area. The Ski Committee can assist in the paying for part of the cost of this course. Trip leader requirements as of April 2020 are in the attached pdf.

Current Ski Leader Requirements

Post A Trip

As an approved Ski Leader post your trip to the AMC ACTdb. Please remember that all AMC trips must be posted to the ACTdb for it to be an official AMC trip and for the AMC’s insurance policy to cover it. Post early, post often.

Trip Report and Trip Budget & Finance Report Workbook.

File a trip report even if the trip is cancelled. This report should describe number of participants, any accidents or problems, recommends new leaders, and other useful comments.

Use one of the following Budget and Finance Report Excel Workbooks to help plan and report your trip if it involves money. Edit the format as needed to fit your trip. All trip funds must go though an AMC account.

Release Agreement

All participants of a trip lead by the Ski Committee must either complete a paper release form at/prior to the event complete or the leader may utilize the electronic waiver in the Activities Database. The paper release form can be viewed and downloaded here: form can be found at this link.

Incident Report

If an incident or accident happens on a trip an Incident Report must be completed and must be submitted to the AMC Risk Manager. The Incident Report can be found here.

Leader Incentives

The Ski Committee and the Boston Chapter have a number of program and policies in place to help leaders get training and education so they can lead safe and exciting trips.

The Ski Committee offers reimbursement for certain training courses according to the policy at this link.

The Boston Chapter offers reimbursement for Wilderness First Aid according to the policy at this link.

The Boston Chapter has a Scholarship program in place until 2021 that allows certain Trip Leaders who go above and beyond to gain additional skills and knowledge so they may offer a broader range of trips and activities. The details of the program are found here.
