Forty Plus Leaders’ Page

We value our leaders for their contribution to Forty Plus. On this page you can find useful information to help you lead successfully. If you have further questions, contact us.

BECOME A FORTY PLUS LEADER
We encourage you to “give back” to the AMC by becoming a volunteer trip leader or co-leader. To qualify, the Forty Plus Committee requires you to:

  • Satisfactorily complete an AMC Leadership Training course given by Forty Plus or any other chapter of the AMC.
  • Show proficiency in the type of activity you wish to lead: hiking, biking, skiing/snowshoeing, or local-area walks.
  • Co-lead three Forty Plus trips within two calendar years in your activity of choice. You should make sure you have experience in planning a trip, registration, screening, and leading on the trail.
  • Be certified in Wilderness First Aid (WFA), if you are leading trips more than one hour away from medical aid.
  • Be a current member of the AMC.

When you’re ready, submit your application to the Activity Coordinator for the activity you have chosen, along with names of the leaders of the trips you co-led. Your application will be reviewed by the Forty Plus Executive Committee, and if you’re approved, you’re expected to lead at last one trip every two years to maintain your status.

WHAT ARE A LEADERS’ RESPONSIBILITIES?
What are AMC leadership requirements? What happens if you have to cancel? How do you report an unusual incident? Review the Requirements for Forty Plus leaders. Download the form here.

POST YOUR TRIP ONLINE
Get your trip notice posted without delay by using AMC’s Online Trip Listing (OLTL) system. To learn how, log into your AMC account to find training videos and guides. Your listing will automatically be sent to the appropriate Forty Plus activity coordinator for approval before posting.

MEET PUBLICATION DEADLINES
Your trip notice should be entered into the Online Trip Listing system where it will be routed to trip approvers for approval.

GET WFA TRAINING
Forty Plus sponsors a SOLO Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course every two years and will subsidize leaders and co-leaders for this course or for WFA courses offered by other AMC committees. You’re required to be WFA certified if leading a trip more than one hour away from medical aid, and you should renew certification every two years.

DOWNLOAD TRIP WAIVER FORM
All participants on any trip must sign the AMC Volunteer Release Agreement, which provides legal protection to you as a volunteer trip leader. Send the original to the address at the bottom of the form and keep a copy for yourself.

SUBMIT TRIP REPORTS
Forty Plus leaders are required to submit a trip report for all trips, from local walks to weekend trips. Return the Forty Plus Trip Report Form to your activity coordinator shortly after completing the trip.

GET YOUR WMNF CARD
Anyone who leads a trip in the White Mountain National Forest (not just wilderness areas) is required by the US Forest Service to carry an Outfitter Guide Contact Card. Without a Guide Card, you could be subject to a large fine, which will not be covered by the AMC. Obtain your card by contacting the Forty Plus hiking leader.

UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
If you change your e-mail address, home address, or telephone number, please update it on Outdoors.org so we can keep our leader and co-leader list up to date.
