This past February, fifteen adventurous Boston Chapter members set out for a three-night Nordic ski trip through Maine’s remote 100-Mile Wilderness, traveling lodge-to-lodge between the AMC’s Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins and Gorman Chairback Lodge.
Starting at the winter trailhead, the group skied through quiet forests and over rolling terrain on well-groomed trails to reach Little Lyford, where the welcoming Croo, warm woodstoves, and hearty meals awaited.

Participants spent a full day exploring the surrounding trails such as Hedgehog and Pleasant River as well as nearby Gulf Hagas, often called “Maine’s Grand Canyon,” before skiing seven miles south to Gorman Chairback. There, sweeping views across frozen Long Pond—and even distant Mount Katahdin—rewarded those who ventured onto the ice.
The final morning was a brisk ski across Long Pond and a steady climb back to the trailhead. Supported by AMC’s dedicated lodge staff—who provided meals, gear transport, and beautifully groomed trails—the trip offered a perfect blend of winter adventure, camaraderie, and rustic comfort in one of Maine’s most spectacular backcountry landscapes.
