Interested in getting outdoors more in winter?

The Hiking & Backpacking Committee’s Winter Hiking Program (WHP) teaches participants the skills and knowledge needed to safely and enjoyably hike in New England during the winter. WHP participants will attend live lectures led by AMC Boston Chapter Hiking/Backpacking Leaders, and then have the chance to try out their skills through a series of instructional hikes held throughout the winter months.

WHP instructional sessions are a live, in-class format, and will be held at a Boston area location.  Class instruction topics include heat management and winter hiking clothing, group hiking techniques, energy management and nutrition, winter travel and snowshoeing, winter safety and injury prevention, above tree-line hiking, non-technical use of ice axe and crampons, winter weather and more. Class instruction includes numerous “breakout sessions”, with hands-on opportunities to observe and learn about winter hiking and backpacking gear. There will be numerous hikes and weekend trips offered exclusively or preferentially to participants in this class to help participants put learning into practice. This is also a great opportunity to meet lots of other people who love hiking and enjoy the outdoors!

Information about registration for the 2026-27 Winter Hiking Program will be announced in the fall of 2026.

If you have general questions about our WHP program, please send an email to whp@hb.amcboston.org.

Note: All gear needed for the hikes will be discussed during the instructional program. Please be advised that safe and responsible winter hiking requires a considerable investment in clothing and gear. The WHP can help participants understand the equipment requirements for different types of winter hiking, to enable participants to equip themselves appropriately for the kind of activities that each wants to join.
