Steps to Become a Leader with Boston Family Outings Committee:
- STEP 1: Take a leadership training program, offered in the fall and spring in the Boston area. Read more about AMC Leader Resources here.
- STEP 2: Coordinate with current Family Leaders to co-lead hikes/walks, then fill out the self-evaluation form. Full information can be found on the Hiking Leadership site, such as:

– Hiking Leader Application - Step 3: First Aid, Wilderness First Aid and CPR classes are often offered at a discount to AMC leaders, allowing you to further enhance your preparedness for hikes and events. Information about these classes can be found under the AMC Leader Resources and via email announcements to Leaders.
- Leaders enjoy additional benefits when booking overnight trips through AMC Reservations, such as staying free at huts and lodges when guiding a group. Learn more about AMC Chapter Group and Leader Benefits .

How to Plan for and Post a Trip:
AMC uses the platform Outdoors Connector to post activities and manage participants, including waivers.
- You can find instructional videos on AMC Outdoors Connector Knowledge Base and the Outdoors Connector Manual. For technical support with the OC, contact amc-boston-oc-support@googlegroups.com
- AMC Boston Hiking Trip Approval Checklist – read and follow these important guidelines for quick approval in Outdoors Connector
- Create a Trip Information Sheet, which should contain meeting location, parking details (fees, if any), expected duration of the hike, weather forecast, and a list of what to bring. The info sheet should also contact the language in these docs:
- Email family@amcboston.org if you need White Mountain National Forest guide cards, snowshoes, microspikes or camping gear.
For Overnight Trips: Please contact family@amcboston.org for instructions on how to budget for lodging, food and miscellaneous expenses.

Post-Trip Resources
After your trip:
- Send a Post-Trip Email (sample here)
- Send this Post-trip survey to participants (more applicable for weekend trips)
- Scan and send in any paper waivers to AMC Headquarters (email address is on the form) if participants were not able to register online.
- Send trip Accounting form to Treasurer (overnight trips only) for any needed reimbursements.
- Trip report form to fill out if your hike was in the White Mountain National Forest.
