DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club

Summer 2018

Welcome

The DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club meets each weekend on either a Saturday or Sunday for recreational walks. This club is open to people of 16 years of age and older, and there is no fee to join. Walks average 2 to 5 miles. New walkers are always welcome.

The terrain can vary:
triangle  EASY (mostly level terrain)
triangletriangle  MODERATE (hilly terrain)
triangletriangletriangle  DIFFICULT (strenuous & steep)

Walks will be led by a park ranger or a Walking Club volunteer leader.
The Walking Club meets at various DCR sites across Southeast Massachusetts.
Some DCR sites charge a parking fee.
The rangers recommend wearing hiking boots and bringing drinking water on all hikes.

Moderate walk, some hills. Walk a 4 mile loop around Ponkapoag Pond on the green dot trail.
Meet at the Ponkapoag Golf Course parking lot at 2167 Washington St. in Canton. For more info, call 617-727-4573.

Nickerson State Park     triangletriangle
Moderate hike with some hills. Hike 4 miles of woodland trails, including a stop at Cliff Ponds.Meet at Fisherman’s Landing to the left off of Nook Road, 2 miles in from the park entrance which is at 3488 Main Street in Brewster.
There is an $8 daily parking fee for MA residents and $15 for non-residents. For more info, call 508-896-3491.

Quashnet River - Waquoit Bay Reserve     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 3+ miles. Walk sandy fire roads following the river from the Kiosk at Martin Road to Mashpee High. The return trip takes us on a narrower trail along the other side of the river. Park at the lot on Martin Road, off Route 28 in Falmouth. For more info, call 508-457-0495.

Moderately difficult. 5 miles + hike to Cherry Pond, one of the loveliest and most secluded hikes in Myles Standish State Forest: Meet at Parking Lot 2 (P2) off of Upper College Pond Road in Plymouth. For more info, call 508-866-2526.

Moderate walk along paved & unpaved trails, 3+ miles. Walk to the Burbank Boulder, a glacial erratic. Meet at the Transfer Station (large warehouse building) on the left side of the park road (Union Street in Hingham), beyond the campground entrance and before Mount Blue Spring. Fall River Heritage State Park     triangle
Easy 2 mile urban walk along the Taunton River boardwalk to Bicentennial Park and back. Meet at the Visitor Center at 200 Davol Street in Fall River. Park in the DCR parking lot at 5 Water Street in Fall River. For more info, call 508- 675-5759.

Moderate walk along mostly unpaved trails, 3+ miles. Hike through the old annex around Trip Hammer Pond and view the ruins of an old sawmill. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham. For more info, call 617-895-8245.

Moderately difficult 5 mile hike. Venture through the stark and beautiful Pine Barrens of Myles Standish State Park. Meet at Parking Lot 5 (P5) off of Charge Pond Road in Plymouth. For more info, call 508-866-2526.

Abigail Brook at Jehu Pond Conservation Area     ▲
Easy walk, 1.5 miles, few hills in wooded terrain. Discover abandoned cranberry bogs, fresh and salt water wetlands while traversing fire roads, woodland trails and bridges with views of the brook and open water along the way. Park at Jehu Conservation area on Great Oak Road in Mashpee. For more info, call 508-457-0495.

Moderate walk with rocky and hilly terrain. Enjoy a  5+ mile hike to the Quarry Loop. Park at 259 Massapoag Ave. in North Easton. There is a $5 MA resident parking fee and $10 non-resident at Borderland State Park. For more info, call 508-238-6566.

Moderate walk, rugged and rocky terrain, 2.5 miles. Walk the summit road to the top of Great Blue Hill. Return via green dot and Wolcott Path. Meet at the Trailside Museum north parking lot at 1904 Canton Avenue in Milton. For more info, call 617-727-4573.
