DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club

Fall 2018

Welcome

The DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club meets each weekend on either a Saturday or Sunday for recreational walks. This club is open to people of 16 years of age and older, and there is no fee to join. Walks average 2 to 5 miles. New walkers are always welcome.

The terrain can vary:
triangle  EASY (mostly level terrain)
triangletriangle  MODERATE (hilly terrain)
triangletriangletriangle  DIFFICULT (strenuous & steep)

Walks will be led by a park ranger or a Walking Club volunteer leader.
The Walking Club meets at various DCR sites across Southeast Massachusetts.
Some DCR sites charge a parking fee.
The rangers recommend wearing hiking boots and bringing drinking water on all hikes.

Blue Hills Reservation     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, rugged and rocky terrain, 2.5 miles. Walk the summit road to the top of Great Blue Hill. Return via the green dot and Wolcott Path. Meet at the Trailside Museum North parking lot at 1904 Canton Avenue in Milton. For info, call 617-727-4573.

Quashnet River- Waquoit Bay Reserve     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 2.5 miles. Walk sandy fire roads following the river from the Kiosk at Martin Road to Mashpee High. The return trip takes us on a narrower trail along the other side of the river. Park at lot on Martin Road, off Rt. 28 in Falmouth. For info, call 508-457-0495.

Wompatuck State Park     triangle
Easy hike, 3.75 miles. A Rails–to–Trails hike along a former railroad bed. Trail terrain will vary between packed dirt and pavement. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham. For info, call 617-895-8245.

Ellisville Harbor State Park     triangle
Walk 2.5 miles along the salt marsh, old agricultural fields, and along the beach at Ellisville Harbor State Park. Meet at the main parking lot on State Road (Route 3A) in Plymouth. For info, call 508-208-0675.

Nasketucket Bay State Reservation     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, 3 miles. Walk along abandoned farm fields, along a rocky/sandy coast and through a holly/oak/beech forest. Meet at the main parking lot on Brandt Beach Road in Mattapoisett. For info, call 508-272-9376.

Borderland State Park Sunrise Walk     triangle
Enjoy a special early morning holiday walk. It’s Columbus Day Weekend…Discover Borderland! Moderate, 3 mile walk followed by coffee at the visitor center. All ages welcome on this special sunrise stroll. Meet at the Visitor Center at Borderland State Park located at 259 Massapoag Ave. in North Easton. Parking fees apply. Nickerson State Park     triangletriangle
Moderate 4 mile hike, with some small hills, to Higgins Pond at Nickerson State Park. Enter at the main gate at 3488 Main Street, Route 6A in Brewster. Follow the park road 3.5 miles to Area 7 Day Use parking lot at the end of Nook Road. For info, call 508-896-3491.

Pilgrim Memorial State Park     triangletriangle
Walk through historic downtown Plymouth and see some of the historic sites including Plymouth Rock, Burial Hill, and the National Monument to the Forefathers. 2.75 miles, paved but hilly terrain. Meet at Pilgrim Memorial State Park near the bathroom building. Paid on-street parking nearby. For info, call 508-208-0675.

Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 3 miles, Walk from the Donovan School to Ponkapoag and return via Madden Road. Meet at the Donovan School on 123 Reed St. in Randolph. For more info, call 617-727-4573.

Moderate hike, 4.71 miles. With Thanksgiving Day approaching, enjoy the Gobbler Hike, trekking north, to the top of Turkey Hill. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham. For info, call 617-895-8245.

Massasoit State Park     triangletriangle
Moderate walk, about 4 miles. Enjoy a fall hike through the woods and wetlands of Massasoit State Park. Meet at the main parking lot at 1361 Middleboro Ave. in East Taunton. For info, call 508-272-9376.
