DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club – Spring 2017

The Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club meets each weekend on either a Saturday or Sunday, usually at 1:00pm, for recreational walks. This club is open to people of 16 years of age and older, and there is no fee to join. Walks average 2 to 5 miles. New walkers are always encouraged to participate.

The terrain can vary:
▲ EASY (mostly level terrain)
▲▲ MODERATE (hilly terrain)
▲▲▲ DIFFICULT (strenuous & steep)

Walks will be led by a park ranger or a Walking Club volunteer leader.

The Walking Club meets at DCR sites across Southeastern Massachusetts. Some DCR sites charge a parking fee.

Blue Hills Reservation ▲▲
Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 3+ miles. Walk from St. Moritz Pond to Sawcut Notch, return on Crags Foot Path. Meet at the Shea Rink parking lot at 651 Willard St. in Quincy.

Wompatuck State Park
Easy walk along paved trails, 3.5 miles. Walk to Heron Pond. Enter the park via the Hingham entrance at 204 Union St. and drive on Union Street one mile and a half through the park. Meet at the Transfer Station (large warehouse building) on the left side of the park road, beyond the campground entrance and before Mount Blue Spring.

DCR Blue Hills Reservation Maple Sugar Days
Saturday, March 18 & Sunday, March 19   12pm to 4pm

It’s sugarin’ time in the Blue Hills! Join us as we make maple syrup in the traditional way at beautiful DCR Brookwood Farm in Milton. Put on your boots and flannel shirt and join the fun! Ride the free shuttle ride aboard  the Maple Express Trolley. Smell the wood smoke as you watch clouds of steam rise from the bubbling sap. Savor the taste of real maple syrup. Discover maple sugaring through time. Kids games, warming fire and food trucks too!  Activities for all ages.

Program admission: Adults $10.00 Children (ages 3-12) $5.00 Ages 2 and under free

Maple Sugar Days is a joint program of the DCR and Mass. Audubon Trailside Museum.

Quashnet River- Waquoit Bay Reserve ▲▲
Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 4+ miles. Walk sandy fire roads following the river from the Kiosk at Martin Road to Mashpee High. The return trip takes us on a narrower trail along the other side of the river. Park at lot on Martin Road, off Rt. 28 in  Falmouth.

Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 3 miles. Walk from the Donovan School to Ponkapoag Trail and return via Madden Road. Meet at the Donovan School on 123 Reed St. in Randolph.

Wompatuck State Park ▲▲
Moderate walk along paved & unpaved trails, 4 miles. Walk to the Burbank Boulder. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham.

Myles Standish State Forest ▲▲
Moderate hike to Lost Horse Bog. Enjoy a 4.25-mile hike to this abandoned bog. Meet at Parking lot #6 at the fire tower on Bare Hill Road on your way to Curlew Pond from Headquarters. Call Dan at (508) 866-2526 for more information.

Borderland State Park ▲▲
Moderate 3.5+ mile walk through some lesser known trails at Borderland State Park. Hilly and rocky terrain. Meet at Visitor Center.

Abigail Brook at Jehu Pond Conservation Area
Easy walk, 1.5 miles, few hills in wooded terrain. Discover abandoned cranberry bogs, fresh and salt water wetlands while traversing fire roads, woodland trails and bridges with views of the brook and open water along the way. Park at Jehu Conservation area, Great Oak Road in Mashpee.

Moderate walk along trails, some hills, 4.5 miles. Walk to Prospect Hill. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204  Union Street in Hingham.

Blue Hills Reservation ▲▲
Moderate walk, hilly terrain, 3.5 miles. Walk the green dot loop in the Great Blue Hill section via Wolcott Path. Meet at the Trailside Museum north parking lot at 1904 Canton Ave. in Milton.

Nickerson State Park
Easy 3-mile hike around Big Cliff Pond and enjoy the many spectacular views. Meet at the end of Flax Pond Road. (restrooms available at the park entrance).

South Cape Beach ▲▲
Moderate walk, 4 miles, some soft sand. Start at Nantucket Sound and hike sheltered woodland trails, with bridges, boardwalks and viewing platforms to observe fresh and salt water wetlands. Visit a secluded bayside beach along the way. Park at Bay Berry Lot, South Cape Beach State Park, Great Oak Road, Mashpee.
Parking fee. $12 MA resident, $14 out of state.
