DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club

Winter 2017-2018

Welcome

The DCR Southeastern Massachusetts Adult Walking Club meets each weekend on either a Saturday or Sunday for recreational walks. This club is open to people of 16 years of age and older, and there is no fee to join. Walks average 2 to 5 miles. New walkers are always welcome.

The terrain can vary:
triangletriangle  EASY (mostly level terrain)
triangletriangle  MODERATE (hilly terrain)
triangletriangletriangle  DIFFICULT (strenuous & steep)

Walks will be led by a park ranger or a Walking Club volunteer leader.
The Walking Club meets at various DCR sites across Southeast Massachusetts.
Some DCR sites charge a parking fee.
The rangers recommend wearing hiking boots and bringing drinking water on all hikes.

December 2017

Sunday, December 3, 1pm-3pm
Wompatuck State Park  triangletriangle
Moderate walk along unpaved trails, 3.5 miles. Take a pleasant hike through the woods, over a bridge and past Woodpecker Pond. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham.

Saturday, December 9, 1-2:30pm
DCR Adult Walking Club Blue Hills Holiday Gathering

Join us as we celebrate the holiday season at scenic Brookwood Farm. Hot beverages will be provided. Bring a holiday treat to share, if you like. We will enjoy some indoor holiday cheer, then take a stroll through the farm fields and woods. New walkers always welcome.
Meet at Brookwood Farm Conference Center at 11 Blue Hill River Road in Canton.
Parking allowed in the upper lot by the conference center at the back of the property. Follow signs.

Sunday, December 17, 1pm-3pm
South Cape Beach State Park triangletriangle
Moderate walk, no hills, but some soft sand. Hike 4  miles from South Cape Beach along sheltered trails to Calley’s Beach on Waquoit Bay. Park at Mashpee Town Beach, at South Cape Beach State Park off Great Oak Road in Mashpee.

Saturday, December 23, 1pm-3pm
Borderland State Park  triangle
Easy walk, 3 miles. Walk the Pond Walk Trail that loops around Leech Pond. Meet at Borderland State Park Visitor Center at 259 Massapoag Ave. in North Easton. $5 per car parking fee. Call (508) 238-6566 for more information.

Monday, January 1
Blue Hills Reservation 27th Annual First Day Hikes

  • Meet Blue Hills Wildlife noon–1pm
  • Hot cocoa & snacks for sale
  • Three DCR Ranger-led Hikes at 1pm

Join the “Granddaddy of First Day Hikes” and celebrate New Year’s Day in the Blue Hills. From noon to 1 pm, visit with live wildlife from the Trailside Museum, purchase a cup of hot cocoa or a snack from the Venture Scouts, share some holiday cheer by the warming fire, and then stretch your legs on one of three easy to moderate guided hikes which all depart at 1 pm. For more info, call 617-698-1802. Meet at the Houghton's Pond main parking lot at 840 Hillside Street in Milton. Arrive early for this popular event. Parking is limited.

Blue Hills Reservation triangletriangle
Moderate walk, with some hills, 2.5 miles. Walk around Tucker Hill on the green dot trail.
Meet at the Houghton’s Pond main parking lot at 840 Hillside St. in Milton.

Sunday, January 14, 1pm-3pm
F. Gilbert Hills State Forest triangletriangle
Moderate walk, some hilly and rocky terrain, about 3 miles. We’ll hike some of the southern trails of the forest.

Sunday, January 21, 1pm-2:30pm
Abigail Brook at Jehu Pond Conservation Area triangle
Easy walk, 1.5 miles, few hills in wooded terrain. Discover abandoned bogs, fresh and salt water wetlands while traversing fire roads, woodland trails and bridges with scenic views along the way. Park at Jehu Conservation area, Great Oak Road in Mashpee.

Sunday, January 28, 1 pm-3pm
Wompatuck State Park triangletriangle
Moderate walk along mostly unpaved trails, 3.25 miles. Hike through the old annex via Triphammer Pond. Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham.

Sunday, February 4, 10am-noon**
Horseneck Beach State Reservation triangletriangle
Moderate walk, some sandy and rocky terrain, about 5 miles. Note earlier start time. Hike along the beach, and around Gooseberry Island. We may see snowy owls! No dogs please. Meet at the main parking lot on John Reed Road in Westport. No restrooms. Call (508) 272-9376 for info.

Saturday, February 10, 1pm-3pm
Blue Hills Reservation  triangletriangle
Moderate walk, hilly terrain, 3+ miles. Wolcott Path to Wildcat Notch and return via Five Corners Trail.
Meet at Houghton’s Pond main parking lot at 840 Hillside Street.

Sunday, February 18, 1pm-3pm
Quashnet River- Waquoit Bay Reserve triangletriangle
Moderate walk, some hilly terrain, 2.5 miles. Walk sandy, wooded fire roads and across the river.
Return on a narrower trail with higher elevation Park at lot on Martin Road, off Rt. 28 in Falmouth.

Sunday, February 25, 1pm-3pm
Wompatuck State Park triangle
Easy walk, 3.25 miles. A rails-to-trails hike on paved and unpaved former railroad bed.
Meet at the Wompatuck State Park Visitor Center at 204 Union St. in Hingham.
