The AMC Boston Chapter Mountaineering Committee plans to offer its annual Ice Program in Winter 2020. The Ice Program is an immersive, 40-hour, 100% volunteer-run instructional program designed to teach waterfall ice climbing to students with Class 5 outdoor rock climbing skills and winter sports experience. The Ice Program is a fun, inclusive, community-oriented experience that enables students to learn safe, efficient ice climbing techniques and practices in a supportive environment.

Blown away on Cardigan and Firescrew

Join us for a traverse of Mt. Cardigan and Firescrew! We will focus on handling the weather on exposed sections of the hike rather than solely on summiting. Our route will climb about 1,900' in elevation gain, around 5.7mi in distance and will take us about 4.5 hours. This is a great chance to work on above treeline (ATL) hiking skills and help decide if bigger ATL trips are for you or not. As such, we will go even in marginal conditions, breaking trail as needed. Participants must have some prior winter hiking experience.

Young Members Skyline Trail in the Middlesex Fells - Last Fall Hurrah!!

Come celebrate the last weekend of fall with Young Members!! Join us for a beautiful hike along the Skyline Trail in the Middlesex Fells with fantastic views of the Boston skyline and the surrounding area. Hike will be roughly 7 miles with 1000 ft of elevation gain at a moderate pace spanning 4-5 hours. As we are approaching the winter months, expect to be prepared for cold weather (lots of layers). Because we will be completing several steep ascents on rocky outcrops under potentially icy conditions, microspikes will be required. This is not a trip for beginners.

Early winter hike to Mt. Flume

Join us on an early winter hike to Mt. Flume (4,328 ft). This will be an out-and-back hike along the Osseo Trail. Expect cold and wintry conditions, We will encounter steep wooden ladders and staircases near the summit. Elevation gain will be 3,150 ft with a round trip distance of 11.2 miles. Full winter gear required and the hike will be limited to 10 participants.

December Hike to Mt. Tecumseh

Join us for a mid-December hike to Mt. Tecumseh (4,003 feet). Mount Tecumseh is in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains. It is the shortest mountain on the AMC's official 4,000 footers list. Mt. Tecumseh is named after the leader of the Shawnee Native American tribe. Views to the immediate north include Mt. Osceola, the highest peak in the region. East, across the valley, is the Tripyramid Massif, which includes North Tripyramid and Middle Tripyramid. We will hike from the Waterville Valley Ski Area and will have 2 water crossings.

Feel the wind on Straightback Mountain and Mt Major

Family Hike - Mt. Watatic and Nutting Hill Loop

Join AMC Boston Family Outings for a winter hike at Mount Watatic in Ashburnham, MA.

We will take the Wapack Trail to the summit (644' elevation gain) at a kid friendly pace. On the way down we will take the gentler Nutting Hill trail back to the parking lot. Total distance is approximately 3.2 miles. This winter hike is best for kids with some hiking experience, ages 6+.

At this time of the year, the trail will be icy in spots so traction devices (e.g., microspikes) are required.
