The Mystic River Watershed Association is a science-based non-profit organization, monitoring water quality, advocating for improvements and encouraging increased access to and recreation on the Mystic River. A major summer initiative is to remove the water chestnut. If nothing is done, this invasive will completely spread over the river, altering the aquatic life and preventing recreational uses of the river. Your efforts are part of a broader decade long effort to restore the river to a native and diverse habitat. In 2015, 966 people were involved in this effort to remove 94,000 pounds of the plant from the river.
We will pair up and embark in canoes to pull weeds out of the water- this will be a great time to learn about the Mystic River and bond with your team. We will bring the plants to shore in laundry baskets and deposit them in a dumpster for composting at a local facility. 9:00 - Arrival and sign any remaining waivers 9:15 - Brief orientation and safety instructions 9:30 - Launch canoes 11:45 - Begin coming to shore, and clean up 12:15 to 1 - Lunch (not provided)
