Offering two paddles to Monomoy Island so the group will divide into two.
1. Spectacular sea kayaking from Chatham down the west side of Monomoy to the historic Monomoy lighthouse. This 18 mile trip will cross Monomoy flats, with excellent chances of seeing striped bass schools and seals. Expect 15 kt southwest sea breezes in the afternoon, so participants should have some experience paddling in wind and chop. Most of the trip will be on Monomoy flats, in shallow clear water. It may be necessary to pull our boats over some shallow areas.
2. A more ambitious and exposed paddle is to circumnavigate Monomoy Island. This group will paddle from Chatham around Monomoy island, possibly the largest seal colony on the east coast. Paddling down the west side Monomoy flats to the historic Monomoy lighthouse, and then up the exposed east side back to the 'Monomoy cut', back into the flats. The leg from the lighthouse to the cut is exposed with a steep beach and no landing opportunities for ~ 4 miles. Participants need to have experience launching and landing in 3' surf. This trip is approximately 20 miles and requires more skill and experience.
