Spring Leadership Training Program

AMC offers COVID conscious opportunities to enjoy the outdoors locally, visit many of our lodges and campgrounds, and join virtual events and activities. Participants of all in-person events should bring and wear face coverings, expect social distancing, and changes to our usual practices. To support contact tracing and hands-free signing of the AMC liability waiver, online registration is required for all in person AMC events.

Trip dates: Tuesday, June 22, 2021 12:00 AM to Tuesday, June 29, 2021 12:00 AM

This follow-on program is for AMC members who have completed virtual leadership training and are interested in organizing and leading Boston Chapter trips and activities. Participation in the program qualifies you to co-lead trips and activities for Hiking/Backpacking, Bike, Ski, Young Members, Forty Plus, Family Outings, Paddling and other Boston committees.

This program is open to AMC members who have completed the AMC virtual leadership training in Fall 2020 or Spring 2021. It builds on the background from the virtual program with case studies and extensive in-person experience, spread over two evening virtual sessions and one Covid-aware in-person weekend day. Topics include trip planning and trip organization, safety, leadership approaches, and group dynamics. The program emphasizes experiential learning and decision making skills.

The in-person component is conducted in small groups, maintaining face coverings at all times and physical distancing where possible.

You must actively participate in both weeknight sessions and one weekend day to complete the program. The two evening sessions are held online Tuesday, June 22 and Tuesday, June 29 from 6:45 pm - 9:30 pm. Weekend sessions are held 8:30 am - 5:30pm on Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27 in various Boston-area locations. Date and location are assigned after registration; we will do our best to accomodate preferences for location and date, including transit accessibility, but can not make any guarantee.

Jonathan Niehof

Jon finished climbing the New England Hundred Highest in 2010 just before heading to the Southwest for a few years. He's thrilled to be back running, hiking, and biking in New England (although he enjoyed his Southwest adventures, including the Pikes Peak Marathon and a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim). He loves discovering new ways to grow in the outdoors and helping others in that discovery.

Phillip Baraona

Phil is a leader for the Hiking/Backpacking and Forty Plus committees. He is also the chair of the Boston Chapter's Leadership working group and a facilitator for AMC's Outdoor Leadership Institute's Train the Trainer program. Phil enjoys day hikes of all types in the warmer months and cross-country skiing in the colder months.
