At 1,621 ft, Mt. Grace is the highest point on the New England Trail and the third highest peak in Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River (following Mts. Wachusett and Watatic). Mt. Grace is an example of a monadnock; an isolated mountain that emerged by eroding more slowly than the surrounding area. The summit features a 68-foot tall fire tower with 360-degree views (the cabin of the tower is currently closed due to Covid restrictions but we can take turns climbing the stairs to just below the cabin for great views if it's a clear day). Mt Grace is also the site of an abandoned downhill ski area. We will pass by some of its related artifacts. Our planned "figure-8" shaped route will cover approximately 7.5 miles at a moderate pace with about 2,200 ft of elevation gain, summiting the main peak twice.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
