This 3.7-mile loop hike will take us on a scenic roundabout route to Mount Watatic, the second-highest summit in Massachusetts east of the Berkshires. We will touch (but not cross) the New Hampshire border on our way to the beautiful overlooks and open areas at the summit. If the weather cooperates, we will have views of the Boston skyline, Mount Wachusett, Mount Greylock, and the hills of southern New Hampshire including Mount Monadnock. Winter (NOT 3-season) boots and microspikes (or Hillsounds) are required. Depending on trail conditions, snowshoes may also be required. You will be required to have snowshoes in the car; a trailhead decision will be made to determine whether or not we carry them. Because of the open ledges at the summit and the steep descent on the return, microspikes or crampons will be required and carried regardless of trail conditions.
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
Per posted regulations at the hike location, face masks will be required at all times for the duration of the hike.
