The AMC Boston Rock Program is an annual event where volunteer Instructors and Assistants teach ~65 Students how to climb outdoors. If you're an experienced outdoor climber and think that teaching others how to climb is a great way to spend a few weekends (and meet new climbing partners) then you're welcome to join us.
The course focuses on learning to safely follow an experienced leader on multipitch trad climbs as well as setting up topropes to climb independently.
Each of our Instructors works with a group of 5-6 Students and 1-2 Assistants to teach the core program skills during each of the program days. On some days we also have special skills stations set up that Students rotate through. Our Assistants help Instructors by demonstrating and teaching skills as well as keeping an eye on Student safety. You can come for as few or as many program events as you like.
We ask that our Assistants are competent top-rope and lead belayers, know how to rappel, and have their own basic equipment (harness, helmet, belay device, personal anchor, and a few carabiners).
If you have previous experience teaching climbers but are new to the program we ask that you start off as an Assistant so you can see how we run the program before becoming an Instructor.
Indoor program events are held in various locations around the Boston metro area, including the AMC headquarters in Charlestown. The outdoor program weekends are held at Quincy Quarries, rain or shine.
We encourage anyone interested to join our optional information session on March 3 from 7-8pm.
The program starts indoors with Knots Night on March 24 from 7-9pm and New Belayers Night on March 31 for anyone who isn't comfortable tying in to a harness and belaying a toprope.
The outdoor program weekends take place on April 4-5, April 18-19, April 25-26, and May 2-3. The program also includes optional social opportunities for Students and Volunteers: the indoor Student Social on April 9, Open Climb Day on April 11, Crow Hill BBQ on May 9, and a Boston Chapter Mountaineering Gym Night during the program.
We have 2 extra events for Volunteers: The Volunteer Kickoff Party on March 20 and the Assistant Skills Refresher on March 28 where Assistants have a chance to visit the Quarries and brush up on the skills they haven't used all year.
Following the program, our graduates are invited to the annual New Seconds weekend in the Gunks (a world-class climbing destination in New York) where they will be paired up with an experienced leader to do some real multi-pitch climbs.
