This instructional trip is intended primarily for participants in the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP), with a few spots available for other members of the community. We will hike up Cannon Mountain from Franconia Notch at a moderate pace, on a crisp, winter day. On a direct route to the summit, we will hike 4.2 miles round trip, with 2200' of elevation gain over varied terrain. Portions of the route are relatively steep, and others will afford us the opportunity to experience above-tree line exposure. 360-degree views from the summit tower, including a breathtaking angle on the Franconia Range 'across the street'. We'll also take advantage of our location by having lunch and warming up at the full-service summit lodge before we descend. Full winter gear is required for this trip, including snowshoes and crampons. As this is a Sunday, the plan is to complete the hike no later than 4pm.
Alex enjoys hiking in all seasons. While best known for fast-paced single day, multi-peak mega-hikes and gnarly back country bushwhacks, he will enjoy sharing his love for the mountains just about anywhere, with hikers at all ability levels.
Bob Knudsen leads trips year round and has taught Map & Compass for the Hiking/Backpacking Committee of the AMC Boston Chapter. He was leader/co-leader on two Adventure Travel backpacking trips to the Canadian Rockies and one to Newfoundland. Bob has hiked the White Mountains for the past 12 years, and has completed the 48 NH four thousand foot peaks including 33 in the Winter.
