This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to registered participants of that program. This is a joint trip to Sub Sig Cabin in collaboration with the Sub Sig Outing Club and is limited to 10 WHP participants. This trip is open to Sub Sig members in addition to the 10 slots for WHP participants. Sub Sig cabin is located in Hart's Location, NH - about 10 miles south of the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch. The cabin has heat and electricity, a fully equipped kitchen, a cosy living/dining room, a 2 room sleeping area with mattresses, a 2 stall HEATED outhouse and even a small library and assortment of games. The cabin does NOT have running water. Leaders and participants are expected to bring 2 gallons of water for personal use, along with sleeping bags and their own breakfasts and trail lunches. This weekend is meant as an introduction to winter hiking on the higher mountains in the White Mountains. Our objectives, in order of priority, are:
- Everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend, - Participants learn winter hiking and travel skills by practising them, especially snowshoeing (snow conditions permitting), heat management, use of traction (if needed), etc, - Set hiking goals according to the abilities and preparation of our group, but try to climb some of the nearby 4,000' mountains., - Leave Sub Sig cabin in better condition than we found it. Sub Sig Cabin will be opened by the Leaders early Friday evening and all participants should aim to arrive by 9.00 pm having eaten dinner on the drive up. Dinner will be provided on the Saturday night, but participants will be responsible for their breakfasts and lunches on Saturday and Sunday as well as meal and cabin cleanup. On Saturday, we will try to hike up Mts. Willey and Field and Tom where we hope to find snow for snowshoeing (snow cover permitting). Sunday we will try for a shorter hike (hopefully Mt. Tecumseh).
