The purpose of this two-day workshop is to learn the basics of winter above treeline hiking. The emphasis of the course will be on individual and group hiking techniques, safety, clothing, and the proper use of crampons and ice axes. Day 1 of the workshop will be spent developing the skills (such as self-arrest) that we'll need for the second day during which we'll attempt to summit Mt. Washington via the winter Lion Head route. Participants must have some prior winter hiking experience along with the stamina and physical conditioning to complete an 8+ mile hike with 4300' of elevation gain over strenuous terrain in potentially difficult winter conditions. There are a few short, steep and exposed sections on the Lion Head route so participants should be comfortable with those types of trails. The workshop utilizes the slopes of Mt. Washington as a training area with Joe Dodge Lodge at Pinkham Notch used as our base. Joe Dodge is a full service, heated lodge with running water, showers, beds, linens, towels, and a dining room. We will be sleeping in bunkrooms reserved for the group.
