Join us for Fall Folliage galore at AMC Carter Notch Hut, our eastern most hut and best kept secret, with its intimate and unimaginably beautiful setting in a notch with some of the finest scenery in the region; a world of towering cliffs and tranquil mountain lakes; the steep faces of Wildcat to the west and Carter Dome to the east; and two glacial tarns. We will hike in via 19 mile brook trail (3.8 miles, 2,050 ft.) carrying our sleeping bags, lunch and snacks, and water. This is a great way to introduce your kids to backpacking without needing to bring along a tent. We will hike at a moderate pace. There are lots of fun boulders to explore and climb too! After settling in those who wish to hike more can do part of the Carter Dome trail, or hike up some of the switchbacks going up to Wildcat. Otherwise you and your family can relax with a book, play games, or, for the brave, take a quick swim in the lake.
Carter Notch Hut was built in 1914 and has a main lodge with two detached bunk houses. The group will carry in supplies and enjoy a group dinner, prepared by participants and leaders, and then more games and storytelling at night. Sunday, after breakfast, we will hike back to our cars. You and your family must be able to hike 3.8 miles along rocky terrain with your own personal gear, sleeping bags and group food. This trip is appropriate for children > 6 years with adults who can hike 3-4 miles in mountainous terrain. Cost: $75 ($85 for non-members) includes lodging, Sat. dinner & Sun. breakfast. Participants are responsible for their own snacks and lunches.
