The AMC will be offering four hikes celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Middlesex Fells with co-leaders from the Friends of the Fells who are experts on the history and nature of the Middlesex Fells. The Fells was established in 1894 as the first state reservation and Metropolitan park thanks to the vision of AMC leaders and Charles Elliot, partner of Frederick Law Olmstead.
The four hikes:
Nature Walk with naturalist Bryan Hamlin, 2 miles. L: Uschi Kullman, Forty Plus.
Family Nature Walk with naturalist Clay Hobart. 2 miles. L: Joan Entwistle, Family Outings.
History Hike, Cross Fells trail to Wright's Tower and back, with a Fells historian. 4 miles L: Nelson Caroballo, Local Walks.
Young Members Hike and Litter Cleanup. 4 miles. L: Katie Blair, Young Members.
All groups will start and end at Medford High School. See driving directions below.
We will convene at 1 pm for a 5-minute introduction to the history of the Middlesex Fells on its 125th anniversary! Hikers will depart at 1:15 pm and return between 3:00 and 4:00 pm.
Wear hiking boots or good trail shoes. Bring water, snacks and a rain jacket. For the nature hikes, an umbrella might be useful. Heavy rain cancels this event.Directions:
Meet at the rear parking area at Medford High School, 489 Winthrop Street, Medford MA 02155, to be ready to hike by 1pm. Enter the school campus from Winthrop St. Turn right across the front of the school buildings, then left along the eastern perimeter
