Trip dates: Sunday, February 17, 2019 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Lets hike Crane Pond Wildlife Management Area located in West Newbury and Groveland, MA (Georgetown Rd/J.B. Little Rd). We'll meet at 12:00 PM in front of the gate at the intersection of J.B. Little and Georgetown Roads, which is also the Townline of Groveland and West Newbury MA. The hike will take us along woodland trails with great views of large areas of extensive wetlands created by beaver activity. Most of these wetlands are interconnected creating a considerable flowage of water that eventually discharges into the Parker River. We'll get the opportunity to enjoy the quiet and solitude of winter hiking along forested trails that meander through this almost 2600-acre wildlife management area. Get the chance to observe up close how beavers can alter the landscape and their environment. Expect to hike about 4.5 miles over woodland terrain. This conservation area is managed by the Massachusetts Division of Fish and Wildlife. Winter conditions will necessitate ice stabilizers, such as Micro-Spikes, for icy conditions or snowshoes in case of deep snow. Gaiters are helpful to keep snow from falling into your footwear. From I-95, take exit 56 west onto Scotland Road, then take a right at 0.5 miles onto Indian Hill St. Bear left at 0.5 miles onto Cherry Hill Street and continue onto Bachelor Road for 0.8 miles, where you will take a left onto Middle Street. Continue for 1.4 miles on Middle St, and then take left onto Georgetown Road continuing for about 0.5 miles where the road becomes gated preventing through traffic. Please note that at this gate Georgetown Rd becomes J.B. Little Road. Use 198 Georgetown Rd for this final destination.
