Enjoy the splendor and serenity of Winter in the White Mountains as we ski to the Zealand Falls Hut for a family friendly self service overnight. We will ski at a leisurely pace enjoying good company and varied landscapes. The trail starts under tree cover, then opens up to beaver meadows and marshlands with open views of Mt. Tom.
We will ski the Spruce Goose cross country ski trail that begins at and parallels Zealand Rd at the junction of rt. 302. The road is closed in the winter. We will ski gently uphill for 4.1 miles to the Zealand trail. From there, we will continue along terrain that is mostly flat with minor ups and downs, gaining a total elevation of 450 ft. along 2.5 miles to the Twinway trail junction. The hut is reached with a short but moderately steep .2 miles gaining another 200 ft, which we will likely do on foot.
The self service hut has one care taker and provides access to the kitchen and utensils to cook our own meals. We carry in our own gear as well as group food and cook dinner and breakfast and clean up as a group. Accommodations included large shared bunk rooms with mattresses and pillows, but no blankets.
This is a good step up trip for the novice looking to advance their winter experience. Participants should have some previous cross country and winter day hiking experience. The main hut area has a small wood stove that is lit at 4 pm, for the evening (but does not get lit in the morning for breakfast). BE WARNED, the bunk rooms are unheated and could be very cold. Winter sleeping bags (0 degree) are essential.
