Hike: Callahan State Park to the Wayside Inn

A walk through Callahan State Park and portions of Sudbury Valley Trustees Henry Hill Reservation to the Wayside Inn in Sudbury. The hike is just under 4 miles with one modest uphill section. This is a one way hike leaving from the leaders home which abuts Callahan State Park. We will meet at the Wayside Inn and carpool to the start. Details for the carpool will be sent to participants.
If there is snow on ground, poles and microspikes or foot traction will be necessary.
Optional Lunch will be at Longfellow's Wayside Inn, which be decorated for the Holidays.

Boston AMC 20s & 30s Outdoor Ice Skate

Join AMC's 20s and 30s for an afternoon of outdoor ice skating at the Jack Kirrane Ice Rink in Brookline to celebrate the start of winter!

We'll skate until about 2PM or until we get tired. Be sure to dress in warm layers since this is an outdoor rink. Admission to skate will be $8 ($6 for Brookline residents) and skate rentals are available for $6. Mt Jefferson in winter

Let's celebrate the first full day of calendar winter at Mt. Jefferson. This is an out-and-back hike of Mt. Jefferson. We expect to hike approximately 11 miles with 4,000-4,200' of elevation gain. Given that Dec 21/22 will have the shortest of daylight all year, we need to get an early start to maximize our time. All participants must be experienced above treeline in winter, also have experience using crampons and ice axes. Bad weather date for the hike will be Saturday, Dec 28.

Eisenhower on Second Day of Winter

Join us for a winter day hike to Mount Eisenhower. Yes, it's a Monday, but maybe you'll have the day off because it's Christmas week. Following the Crawford Path nearly to the summit, we'll hike about 10 miles out and back with 3200 feet of elevation gain. Weather permitting, we'll enjoy beautiful views along the way. This trail has a long, exposed stretch above treeline, and we can anticipate full winter conditions, so previous winter mountaineering experience and full above-treeline winter gear is required.

The cabin is toasty warm with the wood stove, but you will need winter gear and a warm sleeping bag regardless (winter will have set in :) Winter hiking is awesome with cool temperatures, no bugs and all the views (no leaves)!

Hike the Mighty Moosilauke

On this hike up Mt. Moosilauke (4,802'), we will focus on spending time hiking on exposed sections of the trail and will learn how to handle different aspects of the winter weather. This will be a loop hike and will include South Peak plus an added road walk (3 miles out and back) as the access road to the trailhead is closed in winter. Total trip is about 10.9 miles with approx 3,000 ft of elevation gain and should take us around 7-8 hours. This is a great chance to work on above treeline (ATL) hiking skills and help decide if bigger ATL trips are for you or not.

This trip is for AMC Boston Hiking and Backpacking leaders and co-leaders who would like to try winter backpacking for the first time or hone their winter camping skills in a safe and fun environment. The trip will take place in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, likely close to the Kancamagus Highway, with the precise location to be determined. We'll do a modest hike (3-4 miles) with full packs (perhaps to a small peak or pretty destination) and then camp at a sheltered spot that is within a mile or so of a road, allowing early exit if needed.

Southern Presidential Traverse

Single day traverse of the NH Southern Presidentials (Washington, Monroe, Eisenhower, Pierce and Jackson). The total distance of this hike is approximately 16 miles with an elevation gain of 6000 ft. The book time is about 11 hours and could be longer in winter conditions. This is expected to be a small group with all having significant above treeline experience, the fitness and endurance to complete this hike.

Whiteface and Passaconaway in early January

We will hike up to the Blueberry Ledges trail to Whiteface, then take Rollins trail to Mt. Passaconaway, then down via Dicey's Mill trail. Total distance is 11.2 miles with 3,800 feet of elevation gain. Depending upon the conditions and pace of the group, the hike may take over 10 hours. This is not a beginner's hike! You must be prepared with proper gear for extreme winter conditions.

Let's Hike Middle and South Carter

Spend a winter day hiking to the summits of Middle Carter and South Carter 11 mile hike over the wooded peaks of two four-thousand footers, but also passing by overlooks with beautiful views of the surrounding peaks (weather permitting). We may add Carter Dome to this trip depending on conditions! This hike is aimed at experienced hikers who are prepared for 3900 feet of elevation gain at a moderate pace. Duration of the hike will vary depending on the trail conditions and the ability of our group. Pretzel, the hiking dog, will be joining us. Can be combined with Ls Mt Eisenhower Sun hike.

Early January hike to Cannon Mountain

Join us on a 4.4 mile round trip hike to Cannon Mountain (4,100ft), one of the 48 NH 4,000ft peaks. We will take the Kinsman Ridge trail directly to the summit and if the weather is clear we can expect great views across the Franconia Range. Participants should expect to hike at a moderate pace with an elevation gain of 2,250 ft and some limited above tree line exposure near the summit. We will have lunch at the full service skier lodge before retracing our inbound route to complete the trip.
