AMC offers COVID conscious opportunities to enjoy the outdoors locally, visit many of our lodges and campgrounds, and join virtual events and activities. Participants of all in-person events should bring and wear face coverings, expect social distancing, and changes to our usual practices. To support contact tracing and hands-free signing of the AMC liability waiver, online registration is required for all in person AMC events.

Skin & Ski @ Tenney mtn

Saturday, January 9, 2021 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Join us for a Skin & Ski at Tenny mtn near Plymouth, NH. Tenny offers classic New England trails, 1,200 ft vertical, and a reliable snow base. For those new to uphill travel, there will be AT and telemark volunteers available to teach basics on attaching skins, climbing techniques, and heat management. We will make multiple trips up and down the mountain, practicing transitions and getting a great workout. Rentals are available in Lincoln, 30 min away.

Advanced Backcountry XC Ski up Kancamagus Brook Trail

Saturday, February 6, 2021 12:00 AM

Come out to Waterville Valley with Mike and Jim and put your backcountry ski skills to good use on this 11 mile / 1500 vertical foot gain route that goes out on the Greeley Pond trail, up the steeper and more remote Kancamagus Brook trail - HEY LOOK AT THOSE GREAT VIEWS - and then back down the mellower Livermore Trail/Road. This is an advanced trip that will likely take all day. You need to have enough backcountry ski experience to handle some steeper sections and variable conditions, and we recommend metal edged backcountry skis.

Mike Barry

Mike Barry is a reformed alpine skier who leads multi day XC Ski tours in Maine, Quebec, Norway and the Whites with the Boston Chapter & Adventure Travel Committees. His favorite places to ski are Norway for BC touring (though Maine is close!) and downhill in the French Alps (now on Telemark skis). Mike has been involved in the Club as a Boston Chapter Chair, Club Board of Directors and is currently on the Adventure Travel Committee, and is an active chapter bike and ski leader.

Coleader:
Jim Hutchinson

Jim Hutchinson got hooked on backcountry skiing doing day trips in the foothills of the Tetons in Jackson Hole, as well as week-long tours to the 10th Mountain Huts in Colorado. He thinks New England is an ok place to ski as well, and he is working on becoming a leader for both Hiking/Backpacking and Skiing.

Intermediate Backcountry XC Ski out to Greeley Ponds

Sunday, February 7, 2021 12:00 AM

Come out to Waterville Valley with Mike and Jim and get beyond the resort XC trails as we head out and back to Greeley Ponds. The trail is about 8 miles round trip. It is fairly flat to start, but does get steeper near the ponds (~1,200 vertical foot gain in all), and we do hope to include the less tracked section to Upper Greeley Pond. We might have the fun of breaking trail in spots, and you should be comfortable with your snowplow to enjoy the descent. Oh yeah and it is New England, so icy conditions are possible.
