On January 15, 1919, in the North End neighborhood of Boston, a large molasses storage tank burst and a wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph, killing 21 and injuring 150. "Molasses, waist deep, covered the street and swirled and bubbled about the wreckage ... Here and there struggled a form?-?whether it was animal or human being was impossible to tell. Only an upheaval, a thrashing about in the sticky mass, showed where any life was ... Horses died like so many flies on sticky fly-paper. The more they struggled, the deeper in the mess they were ensnared.

The city lights are brighter than usual this time of year -- from the many large Christmas trees found in parks, government buildings, and department stores. Join us as we get in the holiday spirit by taking a walking tour of these popular trees. We will start in the Seaport and make our way to Faneuil Hall, The Boston Common and (if the group is up to it) Copley Square. After our stroll there will be an optional gathering at a nearby restaurant or bar.
The Social Life of Bears Presentation sponsored by the Boston Conservation Committee and Hiking and Backpacking Committee
Ben Kilham will share his fascinating observations, slides and videos, of bears in the wild as he follows cubs that have been rehabilitated and released. Learn how mother bears teach their cubs, and how bears share their territory when food is scarce.
Then learn from AMC and state wildlife experts how to respond to bear encounters on your hiking and camping trips.
Light refreshments will be served.
Join AMC Young Members for a potluck and a walk around the Davis Square area to see the holiday lights! We will meet at Katie Blair's house near Davis Square, bundle up and seek out the best decorated houses in the area. After, we will return and have a potluck dinner.
Note: Katie has a pet rabbit--let her know about any allergies, etc. and she can make sure he is kept upstairs. :)
