Intermediate XC Ski Tour of Leominster State Forest

Sunday, February 21, 2021 12:00 AM

Leominster State Forest is a gem in Central MA that sits on a 4,300-acre parcel of forested land with ponds, streams, rock ledges and oh yeah, it often sports better snow conditions than eastern MA thanks to cooler temps and trails that are mostly under tree cover! Come join Cindy and Jim on a tour as we wind around the forest roads and trails of what once was an unincorporated settlement known at Notown.

The adjacent larger dirt roads are groomed for snowmobiling, but we will stay on the smaller trails/roads.

Advanced Backcountry XC Ski up Kancamagus Brook Trail

Saturday, February 6, 2021 12:00 AM

Come out to Waterville Valley with Mike and Jim and put your backcountry ski skills to good use on this 11 mile / 1500 vertical foot gain route that goes out on the Greeley Pond trail, up the steeper and more remote Kancamagus Brook trail - HEY LOOK AT THOSE GREAT VIEWS - and then back down the mellower Livermore Trail/Road. This is an advanced trip that will likely take all day. You need to have enough backcountry ski experience to handle some steeper sections and variable conditions, and we recommend metal edged backcountry skis.

I'm an "alumni leader" for the Family Outings group. I led ski, camping and hiking trips for many years until my son "aged out" but I still love hanging out with kids and sharing my joy in all things outdoorsy with kids and parents alike. I also love to cook for groups and get folks together over the prep table.

Eddy Luttmer (617-413-1815; before 9pm)

I was the long time chair of the family outings committee and led dozens of trips over the years before my kids "aged out". I love to play outside - especially on XC skis, in a solo whitewater canoe or on my sailboat and I thoroughly enjoy teaching kids (and adults).

Leap Year Nordic BC Skiing in the Sandwich Range, NH

Friday, February 28, 2020 12:00 AM to Sunday, March 1, 2020 12:00 AM

We will celebrate 2020's extra day with two full-day trips in the Sandwich Range Wilderness and the valley to the south. We will choose from a variety of tours using old roads, hiking trails, multi-use trails, and groomed ski trails. Expect moderate pace with several short snack/water stops -- sit-down lunch is unlikely unless temps are super balmy. Limited to six (6) experienced skiers -- comfortable skiing on ungroomed trails and dealing with obstacles like streams and fallen logs, undaunted by the occasional steep hill or possible bushwack, and in good shape.
