Windsurfing trip to Avon, NC
(Hatteras Island, Outer Banks)

Stay in 4-bedroom house (High-Wind Lookout) on the shore of Pamlico Sound. Provide your own transportation and equipment. (Rentals are readily available.) Housing cost $300 pp. Share cooking and cost of food. Water is warm and shallow (3-4 feet deep for more than ½ mile out). Usually a mix of strong and light winds - great for beginners or advanced sailors.

This location on the Outer Banks is widely considered to provide the best flat-water sailing in the East. The water is waist-deep to about a half mile out, and it's chest-deep to about a mile out. The houses are right on the water, and you can keep your sails rigged all week, so when you want to sail you just grab your rig and board and go. There are 3 windsurfing shops nearby (one in walking distance) that have rental equipment.

Typical winds this time of year will vary between 3 and 25 mph most of the time. You usually get some winds in the teens or higher for part of many days. A typical day can have winds in mid-to-upper teens in early morning, light winds in late morning and early afternoon, and strong winds again in late afternoon.

The water in the sound will be warm, and the ocean water will be plenty warm for swimming and boogey-boarding. (I will bring two boogey-boards.) The ocean beach is a 10-minute walk or a 2-minute drive from the house. There's also good kayaking and SUPing on the sound, and there are some interesting side trips on Hatteras.
