Full Franconia Ridge Traverse (AA3A)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat June 15, 2013

Looking for a great way to build endurance before that Presi traverse this summer? Let's hike the full Franconia Ridge hitting four 4k footers along the route - Flume (4328'), Liberty (4459'), Lincoln (5089') and Lafayette (5260'). This hike will be long, strenuous and hopefully scenic with some of the finest views in the Whites (as long as Mother Nature and the bugs cooperate). We'll travel a total of 15.6 miles, with +5722 ft in elevation gain and -5179 ft in loss. Foul weather will cancel the hike. Trip limited to 10 participants. We'll start at the Lincoln Woods Visitor Center and head into the Pemigewasset Wilderness using the Lincoln Woods Trail. From there, we'll meet up with the Osseo Trail to head up Flume and along the ridge hitting Liberty, Little Haystack, Lincoln and Lafayette. After we hit the summit of Lafayette we'll head down the less traveled Skookumchuck Trail. Book time for this hike is 10 hours and 40 minutes. At a moderate pace of 2.0 miles per hour, we expect it will take 12+ hours with stops for rest, lunch, and some photos along the way. We will not be passing the Greenleaf hut. Mt. Pierce Day Hike (B3B)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat June 15, 2013

[Sorry, this trip is Full]. Starting the morning in Crawford Notch State Park, at a moderate pace, we'll summit Mt. Pierce (4,310'), a New Hampshire 4000 footer, while enjoying a beautiful day hike on America's oldest maintained footpath. Originally a bridle path, and it is nowhere really steep and the footing is good. On a clear day, the summit of Pierce has spectacular views of Mts. Eisenhower and Washington. Time and conditions allowing, we will descend the back side on the AT and make a stop at the Mizpah Spring Hut (soup, drinks, and baked goods!). Towards the end of our hike, we'll visit Gibbs Falls just a short distance off the trail. The stats are 6.2 miles roundtrip, 2,500' elevation gain, and a 'book time' of 5 hrs, 30 mins, although we'll take longer, stopping for short breaks. A side trip to the hut will add a bit more time and mileage. We are requiring a stay at a ski club the Friday night before ($20) so we can all start early after a good night's sleep and breakfast
