Kayak Rolling 202: Kayak River Rolling
Paddling Date: Fri May 18, 2012 - Sat May 19, 2012River Rolling 202: Often neglected in paddling circles, the bombproof roll is making a comeback in the 2012. Join us for two days of hard work emphasizing rolling in turbulent river situations. It's going to be fun, but we're going to spend lots of time upside down. Why? Because as your paddling progresses to more difficult levels you really should be able to roll up 99% of the time in class III or IV water. So... if you NEVER miss a roll in the pool/pond, but OCCASIONALLY swim in real river situations, then this class is for you. The course will be taught in a progression of locations moving from flat water (Friday evening at a local pond tweaking technique) through moving current and culminating in a Class III wavehole. The locations will be selected based on water flow and safety. Course Fees: $25/$30 (AMC Members/Non-Members). Camping (~$20) will be arranged for the weekend of the course.

Sea Kayak down Westport River
Paddling Date: Sat May 19, 2012Paddle this beautiful, under-developed tidal river on the South Shore. We launch at Head of Westport (rentals available @ launch) and paddle 12 miles down to Horseneck beach. This tidal river is fairly shallow, so not a lot of motor boats, but will see lots of ospreys. We take-out at town and shuttle cars to avoid the slog back, then regroup at restaurant next to take-out for drinks outside overlooking the river. You must be able to paddle 12 miles in 4-5 hours, with breaks of course. The water is protected from seas, but we might encounter winds. You must have experience with wet exits and assisted rescues.
