Spring on the Battle Road. Share some revolutionary tales along the Battle Road in the Minute Man Park from 9:30am to noon. Walk 7 brisk miles from the Visitor's Center to the North Bridge. Meet at 9:30am in Concord at the Old Manse parking lot on Monument Street. We will carpool to the visitor center. Walk trails to Meriam Corner for a break and on paved roads to the Old North Bridge and the parking. Directions: follow 2A to Concord Center. Follow signs to North Bridge. Bring water and snacks. Joint with the Middlesex Canal Association. Meet at 1:30pm at the Middlesex Canal Museum and Visitor Center in the Faulkner Mill in North Billerica. The walk will be over 3-4 miles of generally level wooded terrain and streets, for 2-3 hours, rain or shine. The route follows the canal south of the Concord River. Sites to be visited include a guard lock, an anchor stone for the floating bridge which once carried the towpath across the river, and many stretches of canal, some still watered. The Museum, Visitor Center and bookstore will be open from 12:00pm-4:00pm. Directions by car: from Route 128/95, take Route 3 toward Nashua to exit 28 (Treble Cove Road, North Billerica, Carlisle). At end of ramp, turn left onto Treble Cove Road toward North Billerica. At about 0.75 miles, bear left at fork. After another 0.75 miles at traffic light, cross straight over Route 3A. Go about 0.25 miles to a three-way fork; take middle road (Talbot Street), which will put St. Andrew's Church on your left. Go about 0.25 miles and bear right onto Old Elm Street. Go about 0.25 miles to the falls where Old Elm becomes Faulkner Street; the Museum is on the left; you can park across the street on the right just beyond the falls. From I-495 take exit 37, N. Billerica, south to the road's end at a T-intersection; turn right then bear right at the Y; go 700' and turn left into parking lot. Museum is across the street. Directions by train: Lowell Commuter Line runs between Boston's North Station and Lowell's Gallagher Terminal. Get off at North Billerica station, one stop south of Lowell. From the station side of the tracks, the Museum is a three-minute walk down Station and Faulkner Streets on the right side. No dogs. Phone 1-978-670-2740.

Slow-paced nature walk in search of a variety of early spring wild flowers and other signs of spring. The walk will focus on plant ID and natural history. 9:30am-12:30pm. From Concord rotary, take Rte. 2 West 2.2 miles, Right on Taylor Road 0.7 miles to Arboretum on right. Arrive early, parking limited. (Note - sign faces opposite direction). Steady rain cancels. These walks are sponsored by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). They are free of charge for AMC members and cost $1 for non-members. No dogs, please. Boot Boutwell is a freelance itinerant naturalist who teaches and leads nature walks for Mass Audubon - Habitat, The New England Wild Flower Society, the Winchester Public Schools, the Friends of the Middlesex Fells, the Appalachian Mountain Club and other organizations.

Beginner's bird walk 3 miles through Fowl Meadow, 7-10:30 am. Learn to bird. See both common and rare bird species at the height of spring migration in the best birding area in the Blue Hills Reservation. Bring your binoculars and a bird book if you have one. From Route 93/128 Exit 2B, take Route 138 north 1.7 miles, turn left on Neponset Valley Parkway and go 0.5 miles to the small lot at Brush Hill Road. Joint with Friends of the Blue Hills. 7-mile hike in the eastern section of the Blue Hills Reservation viewing wildflowers and climbing scenic hills, some steep, including the new trail along the restored Blue Hill Reservoir. 10 am-3:30 pm. Meet at Shea Ice Rink, Willard St., Quincy. From SE Expressway Exit 8 in Quincy, go south 0.6 miles on Willard St. Or from I-93/Route 128 Exit 6 in Braintree, go north 0.7 miles. Meet at 10:00am. This will be a 2-2½ hour ramble to explore Cutler Park, located in Dedham/Needham. Bring water and snacks. Wear hiking/sturdy walking shoes. Trails are mostly dirt, with some boardwalks, flat, with some gentle hills. Moderate pace. Heavy rain cancels. Contact Lisa if uncertain. Driving from Route 95: Take Exit 19A off Route 95. At the first set of lights, make a right onto Second Ave. At the end of Second Ave., make a right onto Fourth Ave. At the end of Fourth Ave., make a right onto Kendrick St. Look for the reservation sign on the left side of the street, before the PTC office building. Park in the lot with the sign. By Public Transportation: Take the Needham Heights Commuter Rail form South Station. Leave the train at the Needham Heights station. Cross Highland Ave and travel down West St. Cross Hunnewell and Webster Streets. West St. becomes High St. Continue on High St. and it will become Greendale Ave. Follow Greendale Ave. to the blinking yellow light. Take the left fork onto Kendrick St. and follow over the highway. Cutler Park will be on the right, after the PTC office building. Total distance from the Needham Heights station is about 1¼ mile. 8 mile loop hike around Chelmsford Cranberry Bog & through portions of Carlisle State Park, 9:15am-2:30pm. Meet at Cranberry Bog parking off Curve St., Carlisle, MA. From traffic circle, center Carlisle, MA on Rte. 225 take Lowell St. north 1.8 mi., left Curve St. 1 mi. to parking on right. The bog section is relatively flat, some trails connecting with and adjacent to the main SP are quite rocky, hilly and may be wet, so boots recommended. Rain cancels. No dogs; non-AMC members $1.
