I-95 Exit 8 to South Main Street toward Sharon, and continue 0.1 miles to Shaw's Plaza on the right. Potluck supper follows in Sharon. Difficult 6-mi. hike/snowshoe including views from lesser-known trails, 9:30am-1:30pm. Bring lunch, water, & sturdy footwear including snowshoes or traction devices. 9:30am-12:30pm. It's been a long winter, but spring is finally here. We'll look for plants in bloom and other signs of the season. The walk will focus on plant ID as well as fun and interesting natural history about the plants which we see. Meet in the driveway of #1 Woodland Rd at the intersection of Woodland Rd and Pond St in Stoneham. Steady rain cancels. This walk is sponsored by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). It is free of charge for AMC members and costs $1 for non-members. No dogs, please. Boot Boutwell is a freelance itinerant naturalist who teaches and leads nature walks for Mass Audubon - Habitat, The New England Wild Flower Society, the Winchester Public Schools, the Friends of the Middlesex Fells, the Appalachian Mountain Club and other organizations.
Spring (?) walk on section of Bay Circuit Trail over Noon Hill summit, easy pace with good views. Bring water, snacks, and clothing and footwear appropriate for conditions. Meet 2:00pm. From Rte. 95, exit 16, take Rte. 109 W 7.5 mi., pass junction with Rte. 27 & take next left onto Causeway St. for 1.5 mi., then R on Noon Hill Rd. 0.3 mi to parking on R. Heavy rain cancels. 1.5 hours; meet at 1:00pm. Easy terrain, moderate pace, kids and dogs welcome. Follow Rte. 133 to the center of west Boxford, where 133 intersects with Main St. (church and village store). Go west on Main St., past the fire station to the intersection of Silver Mine Rd. Park on Silvermine. If there is enough snow, bring cross country skis or snow shoes.
5-mile walk along Neponset River to Hutchinson Field, 9:30am-12:15pm. Bring snack. Meet at Hallet Street entrance to Pope John Paul II Park. From Route 93N, take exit 11 (11B from Route 93S) to Granite Avenue, north over Neponset River, immediate right on Hilltop Street, right under bridge into parking lot. E-mail if severe weather. 9:00am-4:00pm. 10-mi. mod. hike from Wampum Corner, Wrentham to Diamond Hill. 71st season. Bring lunch and water. We will spot cars before the hike. I-95S to Route 295S Exit 11 in Cumberland, RI, then Route 114N for 3.7 miles to Diamond Hill State Park on the right opposite the Ice Cream Machine. Heavy rain cancels. Email Jim if uncertain. Easy 2 hr. walk in Middlesex Fells. Meet at 2pm at Greenwood Park (across from Stone Zoo). Take Rte. 93 to exit 34. Go N on Rte. 28 to South St., right to park. Bring sturdy shoes, water and snack. No dogs; non-AMC members $1.
9 mi. [70+ temp may lessen distance.] Meet at 9:30am in Lincoln RR commuter pkg. lot. From Rte. 95/128 take exit 28 in Waltham, follow Trapelo Road W 2.5 mi., L on Lincoln Rd 1.4 mi., R just before tracks into RR sta. lot. No dogs; non-AMC members $1.
1:00pm. This walk has it all, including deep woods, open fields, a pond, and even bagging a 500 footer with good views. About 2 hours. Meet at the end of Kaileys Way, 42.62245N 71.54062W.
Meet at 10am, finish by mid-afternoon. 6-7 miles. Two small stream crossings. Registration required due to limited parking at trail site. Short car pool. No dogs. Non-AMC members, $1.
7-mile hike on a variety of trails in the Blue Hill Section of the Blue Hills Reservation. Some steep trails, including the Skyline Trail with views, 10 am-3 pm. Meet at Houghton's Pond parking lot. From I-93/Route 128 Exit 3, go north to the stop sign at Hillside Street and turn right. Go 0.2 miles to the lot on the right. Joint with Friends of the Blue Hills. No dogs; non-AMC members $1.
Approx 4-mi walk from Deveraux Beach to Castle Rock and Marblehead Light followed by optional hot chocolate break. 12:30-3:30pm. Take Rte. 114 or Rte. 127 to Ocean St. or Beach St. Go E to Devereaux beach pkg lot. Storm/icy roads cancels. No dogs; non-AMC members $1. [rescheduled from Feb 22]
6-mile easy walk along Nashua River, canal with 1886 gatehouse, spectacular waterfall in 325-acre park, from 9:45am-2pm. Bring lunch and water. Route 128 Exit 32, Burlington, to Route 3N toward Nashua. Stay right on Exit 5 lane and take Exit 5A (Simon Street), then left on Simon Street, left on Whipple Street to parking lot at the end. Brisk 13-mile walk on Battle Road Trail to Fiske Hill in Lexington, Meriam's Corner in Concord, and back. 9:30am-3:30pm. Bring lunch/water. From Route 95/128, exit 30B in Lexington, take Route 2AW one mi. to Visitor Center lot on R. Storm cancels. No dogs; non-AMC members $1.
6-mile hike, some rocky steep hills to cliff views including waterfall w/lunch at pond, Moderate-rated hike, not for beginners. 10:00am-2:30pm. Bring lunch/water/hiking shoes. Meet on Washington St. side of Oak Grove T sta. From Rte. 93 exit 32 in Medford take Rte. 60 E 1.2 mi., L on Highland Ave. 0.5 mi., R on Glenwood St. 0.6 mi., L on Wash. Spring on the Battle Road. Share some revolutionary tales along the Battle Road in the Minute Man Park from 9:30am to noon. Walk 7 brisk miles from the Visitor's Center to the North Bridge. Meet at 9:30am in Concord at the Old Manse parking lot on Monument Street. We will carpool to the visitor center. Walk trails to Meriam Corner for a break and on paved roads to the Old North Bridge and the parking. Directions: follow 2A to Concord Center. Follow signs to North Bridge. Bring water and snacks.
