Midstate Trail hike

Duxbury Beach

10:00am. It is 10-15 degrees colder on the beach. Please dress accordingly. Begin at Powder Point Bridge crossing 1/2 mile to the peninsula which is surrounded by ocean and bay. Hike the beach for 1.8 miles to High Pines. Cross over to a packed dirt road, the Gurnet Road, which passes through thick pine forest on the ocean side and marsh on the bay. This stretch of shore is home to many water birds including the infamous Federally Endangered Piping Plover from early spring to late summer and Snowy Owls in winter. Walk to the Plum Hills, or the Plymouth Town Line, approximately 1 mile. Return the same way. Lunch at French Memories (also owners of Cafe Vanille, Four Seasons Hotel, Boston) at Snug Harbor, Washington Street, Duxbury Center. From North or South, take Route 3 to Exit 11, exit roundabout at the 2nd turn from either direction, onto Congress St.; 1.8 m, bear R onto Church St. which turns into St. George St., 1.1 mile L at the flagpole onto Powder Point Rd. (no street sign), Powder Point Bridge to end. Parking in small lot to the right. No street parking. Call 781-771-3680 if needed. Enjoy our historical heritage, appreciate the wonder which is the Back Bay and learn more about Frederick Olmsted. We will walk about 6 miles at a moderate pace with stops to enjoy major sights but we should be done by 12:30pm. We will meet at the Arlington T stop, in front of Hermes at the corner of Boylston and Arlington at 9:30am. From the Commonwealth Mall to Park Drive to the Muddy River to Jamaica Pond and on to the Arboretum. Most of the Necklace will be covered. End at Forest Hills T on the Orange Line. We will cross 2 or 3 roads but otherwise be off the roads. No dogs; non-AMC members $1.
