Discover the remote Maine woods on true ski adventure. We'll be based at West Branch Pond Camps within the AMC's 70,000 acre reserve east of Greenville, Maine. This year we offer two different types of experience in one trip!. Either BC ski on unbroken trails, winding up the White Cap Mtn ridge and through thick woods or "Max km" XC gliding on groomed or packed out trails.
The BC tours will be 10+ miles and 2000+ feet and wind up mountain ridges and through some thick woods. Expect some climbing and descending but skins and advanced downhill or tele turns are not required, but participants should be comfortable on varied terrain and conditions. The best ski will be a metal edged, double camber touring ski, and it may be best to bring several widths for variable conditions if you have them .
The "Max km" option XC tours will be 20+ miles and 1000-1500 feet rise on dirt roads or trails graded for skiing. The trails will be either groomed or packed out for long distance and higher speed kick and gliding. The best ski will be either a touring center ski or narrow BC ski, depending on the conditions. The tours will have either the club's Lyford Pond Camps or Medewisla Lodge as a destination.
We will use a hotel in August, Maine (lodging included) as a gathering point on Thursday night, 2/23. On Friday 2/24 we will car pool to Greenville, then West Branch Pond Camps via a 20 mile-dirt road, that is plowed in winter, in time for our first day of skiing. On Sunday, 2/26 we will have nearly a full day of skiing before driving back to Boston. Each night, you'll find ambience, great company and hearty replenishment after a great day in the woods.
Your fee of $425 AMC members/$450 non-members will include 1 night in a hotel in Augusta, Maine and 2 nights at West Branch Pond Camps, all meals from breakfast on 2/24 thru lunch on 2/26 except for lunch on 2/24, ski guiding and ambience.Directions:

Mike Barry is a reformed alpine skier who has led multi day XC Ski tours in Maine, Quebec, Norway and the Whites with the Boston Chapter & Adventure Travel Committee. His favorite places to ski are Norway for BC touring (though Maine is close!) and downhill in the French Alps (now on Telemark skis). Mike has been involved in the Club as a Boston Chapter Chair and is currently on the Board of Directors and on the Adventure Travel Committee, but his first love is just leading ski trips.
