VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Charles River MUD
We are always looking for well written articles about the outdoors, conservationissues, your experiences on AMC trips, tips on outdoor clothing and equipment, poetry, - you name it. Articles should be approximately 500 words and submitted by email as ASCI or MS Word files Contact: Mud Editor

Trip Leaders
We always need trip leaders for day and weekend trips. You need to have an adequate skill in the proposed activity but you do not need to be an expert. You do need to enjoy organizing activities and helping participants to enjoy themselves safely.

Each activity committee has different leadership requirements depending on the level of skill required for that activity. You must be an AMC member and registered as a trip leader with the committee you wish to lead trips for. There are usually two trip leaders on every weekend trip.

We highly recommend the Boston Chapter Trip Leadership Program run each spring and fall. It is advertised in the Charles River MUD. It involves two lectures held on two week nights followed by a weekend that focuses on teaching leadership skills through understanding group dynamics and decision making. Contact the Hiking/Backpacking or INTRO committees

Outdoor Skill Instructors
Several committees such as Canoeing, Skiing, Biking, and Mountaineering run beginner instruction weekends. Qualified instructors are always welcome. Those with leadership skills and experienc in other organization will find a home immediately!

Trail Maintenance
Some AMC members participate in the AMC Adopt-A-Trail program. Those trails are usually located in the White Mountains. The Boston Chapter also has a Trail Maintenance Committee. This committee runs local trail clearing days and helps to maintain many local hiking trails.

Committee Members
These are the unsung heroes who are really responsible to ensure that we keep on having trails to hike, skills training, and safe outdoor trips. They do the behind the scenes work to plan programs, trip schedules, potlucks, trip leader meetings, committee newsletters, and many tasks too numerous to mention.

In addition to activity committees, there are service committees such as Trails Maintenance, the MUD , the Conservation and Membership committees.
