BOSTON 2017 ANNUAL SPRING HB HIKING AND BACKPACKING PROGRAM

Want to try hiking or backpacking or feeling rusty and want to brush up on your knowledge and skills? This Hiking/Backpacking (HB) Committee Annual 3-Season Hiking Program is designed for adults, but parents are welcome to attend with their "older" children, in addition to accompanying them on associated hikes. This is an interactive course consisting of 5 instructional sessions to introduce the basics of spring, summer and fall day hiking and backpacking in New England.

Family/HB Mount Morgan & Mount Percival Loop Hike, Holderness, NH

Join Family Outings and H/B to hike the Mount Morgan (2220')/Mount Percival (2212') loop (~ 5.3 miles; 1575 feet of elevation gain). This hike is appropriate for kids and adults ages 8+ with some hiking experience on open rocky ledges. We will hike open ledges, a series of fun wooden ladders and tight squeezes through rock caves, cliff faces and rock scrambles, not for the faint of heart, as well as an alternate path or two should caves and ladders not be your thing. The climb is moderate to steep.

Easy Family Hike to Williams Land - Newtown Hill, Littleton, MA

Kids Intro to Fishing Trip, Medfield, MA

Our Fifth Family Kids Learn to Fish class. Come join us as we teach kids ages 6 and up to learn the basics about bait fishing. We cover topics such as reading water, bait, lures, bobbers. Trip limited to 10 kids plus parent(s). Meet at Rocky Woods in Medfield, MA by 8am Sunday May 7th. We have access to a number of ponds and you don't need a fishing license. AMC Family Outings supplies rods/bait/hooks. There is an entry fee if you are not a member of the Trustees of the Reservations.There is also a fee of $5 per child to cover bait/line etc payable on site.

Family Mother's Day Shapleigh Bunkhouse Overnight in Crawford Notch, NH

A weekend of spring hiking in beautiful Crawford Notch. Saturday we will hike Mt. Willard (3.2 miles) gorgeous views into Crawford Notch. Saturday night we will stay at Shapleigh Bunkhouse next to Highland Center. The bunkhouse sleeps 16, is coed, heated, has bathrooms/showers and a common area. Saturday night we will have dinner at a local pizza pub with option to enjoy Highland Center evening program. Sunday breakfast will be at the Highland Center followed by leader's choice hike. Sunday options will depend on the groups abilities and conditions.

Family Overnight Backpack to AMC Zealand Falls Hut, White Mtns, NH

Join us for a night at Zealand Hut, one of AMC's easiest huts to access. The hut, with co-ed bunkrooms, is spectacularly situated on the side of Zealand Valley near Zealand Falls at the northern end of the Pemigewasset wilderness. We will hike in via the Zealand trail (2.8 miles, 650 ft. gain) with additional optional explorations including a 4K peak. Carry your sleeping bag, lunches and snacks, water and gear. The group will carry in supplies for dinner and breakfast and prepare it together in the hut kitchen.

Family Walk at Prospect Hill Park, Waltham, MA

Memorial Day Weekend Family Camping at Tully Lake, Royalston, MA

Family Walk to See the Fledgling Herons in Sudbury, MA

The Lyons-Cutler Reservation, a property of the Sudbury Valley Trustees in Sudbury, has 5-7 heron nests. At this time of year, the eggs have hatched and the baby herons have yet to fledge, so they are living in their nests. Herons have several young and they make quite a racket in their nests. The nests are high in the branches of both live and dead trees in the wetlands at Lyons Cutler. The walk is flat and takes only about 20 minutes from the parking area at a near-by school where we will meet at 9:30 am.

Family 4000-Footer Hike to Mt. Moosilauke, Benton, NH

Join the leaders and their kids for a hike to the bare summit of Mt. Moosilauke. If the weather is good, we will be treated with gorgeous views in all directions! Round trip is 7.4 miles on the out-and-back Gorge Brook Trail with 2450 feet elevation gain. This hike recommended for kids ages 8+ with prior hiking experience. Although a June hike, at the base it may feel like spring while the summit may feel like winter so warm layers, wind protection, gloves/hats will be required.

Franconia Ridge Family Hike, White Mountains, New Hampshire

Enjoy this classic hike across one of the most beautiful ridges in the White Mountains. Ascend the Falling Waters trail to Little Haystack, traverse the Franconia Ridge going over Mt.Lincoln to Mt.Lafayette, then down via The Old Bridle Path. 8.9 miles, and over 4,000 feet of total elevation gain. This is a strenuous hike, best for kids age 9 and up, but a classic and beautiful and we know some of you and your kids can do it. Registration required. We will help you assess if you and your kids are ready for this spectacular adventure. This will be a long, but very beautiful special day.

Family Lonesome Lake Hut Overnight, Franconia, NH

Join us for a fun overnight at family-friendly Lonesome Lake hut. We will hike 1.6 miles to the hut (and gain 1000' vertical feet) at a kid friendly pace (~1-1.5 miles/hr); the route crosses 2 bridges and features a few mild rock scrambles, and the moderate incline is moderated by switchbacks. We will stop along the way for snacks, a look at nature and possibly for lunch by the lake. Once at the hut, you will have free time to enjoy a swim or continue on to the summit of N.Kinsman (4293"). Monday, we will hike around the lake and back to our cars. Best for ages 5-12.

Family Friendly Pitcher Mountain Hike, Stoddard, NH

Join us for this incredible big-bang-for-your-buck family friendly hike to Pitcher Mountain with a fire tower and 360 degree vistas including the many surrounding hillsides and pastures, the Green Mountains, Mt. Monadnock, and on rare occasions, a glimpse of the White Mountains, well worth the almost 2 hour drive from the Boston area. This is a joint Family Outings Hike and is part of the Spring Hiking Program as well. We will hike an easy 1 mile loop trail suitable for beginners and all to enjoy.

Family/HB Overnight Beginner Backpack To Ethan Pond

This is a joint Family and Hiking.Backpacking trip. We will be backpacking 2.7 miles up a steady incline to the tentsites at Ethan Pond. The elevation gain will be 1420', 4". The campsite is located on the shore of a pristine mountain pond. Those ambtious enough may try to summit the nearby Mt. Wiley (4285) after making camp. Family Weekend at Sub Sig Cabin, Crawford Notch, NH

Join us for a weekend at Sub Sig Cabin in Hart's location in Crawford Notch down the road from AMC Highland Center. This is a half century old hidden jewel …in fact it is called Hart's location and the cabin ( Sub Sig) is rustic yet clean and functional with an outhouse ( yeah) and hauled in water. We will plan a hike choice both Saturday and Sunday as well as group breakfasts and a supper prepared by us all on Saturday evening. Trip is recommended for families with kids ages 7 - 12. Group size will be limited to 15 lucky souls.
