The job of a trip leader is to make sure that all participants have a safe and enjoyable ride. To ensure that all leaders are prepared for these responsibilities, the Boston Chapter Bicycle Committee has adopted the following policy. The first step is usually to become a co-leader for the Bicycle Committee.
To become a co-leader, you must have current AMC membership and take the AMC Boston Chapter Leadership Training Class. If, during the class, you express interest in leading rides for the Bicycle Committee, you will automatically be made a co-leader.
If you are a current AMC member and have taken the Boston Chapter Leadership Training Classor Leadership Training with another AMC chapter or committee of the Boston Chapter, or actively lead trips for another committee of the Boston Chapter, you will be made a co-leader upon request. In other cases, the Bicycle Committee will have to approve your request.
If you have other training or experience that prepares you to be a co-leader, you can ask the Bicycle Committee to waive the Leadership Training Class requirement.
To request approval to become a co-leader, either submit the online application or contact the Bicycle Committee Chair.Once approved, to start leading rides for the Bicycle Committee, contact the Bicycle Committee Chair.
If you are a co-leader for the Bicycle Committee and want to become a leader, arrange to co-lead at least two rides with at least two different Bicycle Committee leaders. Before the rides, discuss the leaders' expectations, and after the rides, ask whether they can give you positive recommendations. Expect to do more than ride in the sweep position for the two rides.
After co-leading two or more rides, either submit the online application or contact the Bicycle Committee Chair. The Bicycle Committee will vote on whether to make you a leader. (Between the May and September meetings, the committee may vote by e-mail.)
If you have other training or experience that prepares you to be a leader, you can ask the Bicycle Committee to waive the usual requirements.
To maintain status as a bicycle leader or co-leader, you need to lead or co-lead at least one ride within a two-year period, have been an active member of the Bicycle Committee, or have worked on a Bicycle Committee special event.
To be reinstated to leadership status, submit a request to the Bicycle Committee Chair.
